DJI Phantom 2 Quadcopter Specifications

The DJI Phantom 2 Quadcopter is a 100 gram quad with certain improvements over the first Phantom quad. This one has a self-tightening propeller, a Micro USB Port (on both battery and quad body) and a CAN-Bus expansion module. The battery is a high performance, high capacity Lithium Polymer 5200mAh, which claims to offer a flight time of up to 25 minutes.

The remote control has a simple design fitted with spring centered sticks. The sticks center when released to enable the quad to hover automatically. The remote control is designed to have a 1 kilometer range and has a tilt control for more stable images. The camera is supported by an H3-2D and H3-3D gimbal that makes it easier to take high quality, steady aerial videos of the flight path. It is possible to stream real-time live flight footage with the support of an iOSD mini or iOSD MK II.

A full first person view experience is possible with an additional DJI Lightbridge 2.4G HD digital video downlink. It can be connected to a monitor. The user can control the flight controller with the built-in remote controlled link of 2.4G or 5.8G DJI remote control.

The DJI Phantom 2 Quadcopter Review

The DJI Phantom 2 Quadcopter package opens to reveal a recycled inner packing and an accessories pack. Inside the packaging are a few separate items: the white Phantom 2 quad, the battery charger, the remote transmitter and the self-tightening propellers in a small package.

The assembly is easy. Remove the guards on the four motor shafts. Remove the propellers from the packaging; install the propeller with the black cone onto the shaft with the black dot, the silver cone onto the shaft without a dot. Accessorize with stickers. The quad comes ready to fly, after a single battery charge. Turn on the remote transmitter (running on 4 AA batteries) and then turn on the quad battery. Wait for system to initialize, start the motors with the combination stick commands and fly.

The Micro USD port can be used for parameter tuning with support software and for upgrading firmware. If you want to extend functions, you can use the CAN Bus module. It’s great that the battery has little LED lights for maintenance reminders and data on battery capacity. This makes it more convenient to keep the battery safe and high performing. Simply hold and release the switch on the battery to turn on or off.

What You’ll Love About The DJI Phantom 2

The DJI Phantom 2 is easy to set up, stable in flight and has good battery life. It can fly up to nearly half an hour on one charge. While it has a learning curve, once the controls are mastered it delivers great quality and is fun to fly. The biggest USP of the Phantom 2 is that it offers excellent aerial video with a sophisticated stable camera. With the addition of a DJI Lightbridge video downlink and OSD system, users can have a full HD first person view experience of flying the quadcopter.

There are several other great features in the smartly designed quad. For one, the flight path can be programmed on an iPad for precision flight. It is also very easy to change batteries because of integrated compartment.

What Could Be Improved In The DJI Phantom 2

The Phantom 2 has a tendency to bounce when landing and this can end up damaging props more often than not. It is useful to have several spare props handy, as it may not be effective to change the prop guards that aren’t very effective. Alternately, the turbulence of the air below the quad can be reduced when landing, by gently lowering the throttle as the quad is about 10 feet from the ground. This allows the air below the quad to settle and helps it to make a smoother landing.

There are a few other improvements we could hope for in future versions of the Quadcopter Phantom 2. The instructions manual needs to be strictly followed before use. WiFi streaming is not possible from a camera. Users have experienced flyaways, in which the Phantom 2 doesn’t respond to Transmitter inputs and throttles in a random direction. Many of these however have been due to poor calibration and pilot error.

The Verdict

The DJI Phantom 2 is a powerful little quad with excellent capabilities to shoot videos. It comes at less than $1000 and is worth the investment for RC enthusiasts that want to experience first person flight from their backyards.
