Drone Reviews

DJI Inspire 1Drone enthusiasts need the best drone that they can both afford and meets their skill level.  With all the drones available in the market today, buying a drone that is perfect for you can be difficult!  There are many different choices, which is why our drone reviews can really help!

Some drone enthusiasts prefer to jump straight in to higher end models, while others prefer to start with less expensive models and work their way up, which is what we recommend.

If you’re new to drones, we recommend starting with an inexpensive Hubsan X4 then later, upgrading to a higher end model with a more sophisticated camera, more technology and additional features.  This allows you to slowly learn the more advanced features, become  a skilled pilot, and also makes you appreciate the more advanced features found on the higher end quadcopter models.

One of the most important aspects of buying a drone is factoring in both your budget and your skill level.  If you are a new quacopter pilot, investing $500.00 or more into a higher end unit probably isn’t the best option.

Learning to fly a quadcopter takes practice and time, and crashing your new high-end quadcopter the first day you get it probably isn’t the best way to start out!

With so many different models on the market, how do you choose which one to buy?

Below, we highlight the best quadcopters for each skill level to save you time.  To see a list of all the best quadcopters on the market, check out our comprehensive Drone Guide which lists out all of the top drones on the market, highlights their features allowing you to side by side compare them.  Some models even have comprehensive drone reviews written up by us.

Drone Reviews

Purchasing a drone that is appropriate to your skill level is critical to having a fun and enjoyable experience.  Nothing is more frustrating for a beginner than purchasing a high-end quadcopter and then crashing it into a tree on your day while trying to learn to fly!

Instead, start off with a good flying, durable, and inexpensive drone.  Use this intro model drone to learn how to fly, and learn the basics of piloting a drone.  Once your skill level is increased, you can move up to a more advanced unit.  Don’t think your money is wasted.

Below we highlight the best drones by skill level.   These selections are based on our own personal expeience, and using comments and reviews by others, as well as comparing the various features, we’ve selected the top drones for you.

Be sure and click through and read the comments and reviews by others, you’ll find these really helpful in your purchase decision as well.

Best Beginner Drones

Here are the best drones for beginners.  These drone models are inexpensive, easy to fly, durable and reliable.

Hubsan X4

Hubsan X4 H107DOur personal favorite is the Hubsan X4.  There are many different versions, some even have cameras.  Our personal favorite though, and our top rated beginner quadcopter is the original Hubsan X4 H107.   The X4 comes ready to fly out of the box, and all you’ll need to do is put batteries in the controller, and charge the battery for the quadcopter itself.  One a full charge, the battery typically lasts about 7 minutes.  When the battery runs low, LED lights on the outside of the arms will begin to blink letting you know it’s time to land it.

The Hubsan X4 has multiple modes as well.  The beginner mode provides slower response and more stable flight, where the expert mode provides faster response, faster flight and even enables a few trick moves you can do.  Want more information?  Read our full review.

This is an awesome little quad, and one everyone should own.  I’ve crashed mine so many times, but it’s taken very little damage and just keeps on flying.  Great for both indoor and outdoor flying, you just can’t go wrong buying this quadcopter.

Syma X1

Syma X1 Quadcopter ReviewAnother really awesome quadcopter for beginners, and honestly is nearly as good as the Hubsan is the Syma X1.  The Syma looks like a higher end unit, and comes with a stable flight system, making it ideal for beginners.  It also has both beginner and expert flight modes, allowing the unit to scale with your skill.

One neat aspect of the Syma X1 is that it offers multiple body shells that you can change out, allowing you to customize it’s appearance.  You can read our comprehensive review for more information.

The X1 comes ready to fly out of the box.  Just put batteries in the controller, charge the quadcopter battery, and you’ll be up and flying.

Best Intermediate Drones

Intermediate Drones have many of the technology and flight features of the higher end units, but lack some of the hardware and more advanced features.   Intermediate drones are a little more expensive, but offer longer flight times, more control, and often include FPV (First Person View), so you can see what your quadcopter sees.

DJI Phantom 2

DJI Phantom 2 Vision Plus ReviewDJI is well known for making the best selling quadcopters in the industry.  The DJI Phantom 2 line offers incredibly stable flight control, long distance, and even auto return if you fly beyond the units range or the batteries begin to die.

The base Phantom offers nearly all of the features of it’s more advanced siblings, but doesn’t include a camera.  Although a GoPro, or other high-end camera can be easily added to it.  The unit is controlled via tablet or photo device, such as an iPhone, IPad, or android device.

Due to the more expensive price on the Phantom, you’ll want to be sure you piloting skills are up to par.  You definitely will not want to accidentally crash one of these into a tree or building.

Like the beginner units, the Phantom 2 comes ready to fly out of the box.  You’ll basically charge the batteries, slide the props on and you’re ready to go.  We highly recommend reading through the manual first, and familiarizing yourself with the controls and features.  One of the key differences you’ll notice once up in the air is stability.  The Phantom 2 will literally hover in mid air without you having to touch the controls at all.  Secondly, you’ll notice the it’s much faster than the beginner units, with a max speed of about 25 miles per hour.

You’ll love this quadcopter, it’s state the art and for a great price.

Parrot Bebop

Parrot Bebop QuadcopterParrot was one of the pioneers in personal quadcopters.  Their initial model was a huge seller and really set the standard for today’s quads.  Their latest market entry is the Parrot Bebop, and not only provides a very unique design, but is a really great quad too AND it comes with built in camera.

The unit includes advanced stabilization, and an auto home feature.  Like the DJI Phantom, the Bebop is controlled using a wireless device such as an iPad or iPhone.  A controller called the “Skycontroller” from Parrot is also available an works with your wireless device.  The controller is really pretty innovative.

The camera is decent and uses a fish eye lens to allow you to see a wider view.  This quad provides FPV via the camera and wireless device, which is really nice.  This is a reliable, well built model that will last you for many years if properly cared for.
