The first thing that you’re likely to notice about the Estes 4606 Proto X Quadcopter when you take a look at it is its size. At just under 2” square and 11.2g this micro drone is pushing the limits of miniaturization. Although it only manages 5 minutes of flight time from its included 3.7V 100mAh LiPo battery pack the 4606 Proto X is an absolute blast to fly around the house. Our Estes 4606 Proto X Quadcopter Review covers all of the ins and outs of the world’s smallest micro drone.
Estes Proto X 4606 Quadcopter ReviewThe Estes Proto X is very responsive thanks in part to the relatively large amount of lift it generates compared to its weight. The Estes 4606 Proto X Quadcopter uses a modern digital trim system and 2.4 GHz wireless communication in order to keep it flying where you want it. The controller itself uses dual analog sticks and push-button trim controls just like a larger quadcopter.
In fact, just about everything on this little quad would be at home on a larger one, and it’s very intuitive to pick it up and start flying if you’re used to operating a larger drone. Before you know it you’ll be buzzing around corners, looping and diving through the living room, and hovering over the table.
Obviously the small size of this quadcopter is a big selling point, but it does lead to a few complications. Since a larger wingspan lends stability, Estes has had to engineer the 4606 Proto X Quadcopter carefully in order to keep it hovering on the level. They’ve accomplished this with careful component placement, keeping the machine perfectly balanced, but that also means that the chassis and battery compartment are entirely sealed. While you won’t be able to replace the battery or mod the motors, the Estes 4606 Proto X Quadcopter has been designed with longevity and durability in mind.
This little quad is durable for sure, with a one-piece high-impact plastic frame and replaceable rotors. While it might look like a toy next to a full-size quadcopter, and to a certain extent it is, it’s a toy that’s been crafted out of premium parts that make it resistant to the bumps, knocks, and crashes of indoor flying. Even down to the sensors themselves, Estes has used some of the smallest, lightest, and toughest new components available to build up this micro quad. While it’s a fairly affordable little drone, the Estes Proto X comes with everything you need to get started. Included in the package are all of the basics you’d expect from any quadcopter, like a USB charger, radio controller, and even a full set of replacement blades. Although the controller feels a bit small and light compared to what you’d get with some larger and more expensive machines, it holds up fairly well when you consider the short flight times and tight, touchy turns that come with indoor flying.
For everything it gets right, the Estes Proto X Quadcopter does have its limits. As mentioned, with a 50-minute charge you get 5 minutes of buzzing around the house. That’s obviously due to the tiny battery pack, but this little copter is so much fun you’ll find yourself wishing for a bit more time. Another thing to look out for is open windows, since the Proto X 4606 weighs under half of an ounce you might find it buffeted more than you’d expect, even by breezes coming in through an open screen door. Finally, its small size can make tight turns disorienting but Estes has countered this by including different colors of LED lights on the chassis, blue on front and red in the back, to make it a bit easier to keep track of which end is which.

The Bottom Line
There’s no doubt that the Estes Proto X 4606 Quadcopter isn’t a payload-carrying quad workhorse, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t a ton of fun to take around the house. It’s tight design and excellent build quality help it perform better than some might expect, even when you consider the fact that Estes generally does a good job with their machines. It’s a low-cost, complete system with tight controls that are perfect for indoor flying. Whether you just want to own the smallest quad currently on the market, you’re looking for a way to introduce friends and family to the hobby, or you just want a little quad to fly around the house on rainy days you really can’t go wrong with the Estes Proto X 4606 Quadcopter .>>> Get more information and read customer reviews at Amazon.com <<<
