Battery Life (for size)
Value (bang for your buck)
Summary : Good looking and well designed quadcopter, especially when coupled with the innovative Skycontroller. Unfortunately a few firmware and software glitches keep us from being able to rate it as high as we would like
Pros: Great camera, with a wide angle fish eye lens, unique and cool looking design, easy to fly, FPV via the camera, GPS stabilization, auto home, small and light weight, durable, available in two colors (blue and red), the Skycontroller is amazing, comparative low cost.
Cons: Firmware and software issues out of the box (be sure and apply the latest updates), tends to drift 2-3 feet when not calibrated (requires frequent calibration), video quality is really good, but not as good as manufacturer suggests, Parrot support has been spotty for us in the past.
Parrot Bebop ReviewThe new Bebop drone by Parrot is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after drones on the market right now with its innovative Skycontroller. Not only does the drone come with an affordable price tag, but it is also feature-rich, comprehensive and it comes with a very user-friendly interface as well, especially when equipped with the optional Skycontroller.
With an integrated high-end 14 MP camera, the Parrot Bebop drone is Wi-Fi based and it can capture high-quality, crisp 1080p aerial videos thanks to its state of the art technology. Having said that, this Parrot Bebop review will emphasize the most notable features and functions of the drone, as well as on its pros and cons.
In addition to the advanced camera that is built into the device, the Bebop quadcopter is also compact and relatively lightweight – its three-axis motion sensor coupled with its 180-degree fisheye lens make this UAV the a great choice for professional photographers and videographers who want to take their profession to the next level using aerial photography. We still prefer the DJI Phantom, but for the money, the Bebop is a great option. As mentioned above, the new parrot drone comes with the slick new Skycontroller: you can easily turn the drone on and operate it from your iOS or Android smart phone or tablet, as the drone comes with a versatile and user-oriented app called the Free Flight. The application is very straightforward and it offers you full control over the video resolution: you can easily adjust the resolution based on your preferences, as the Parrot Bebop can also record in high resolution mode. The drone also features two antennas that work on two different frequencies: 2.4 GHz and 5GHz.
What You Will LikeThe Skycontroller is certainly the backbone of this quadcopter, as it can easily extend its Wi-Fi range up to 1.2 miles. Also, the user-friendly control pad makes drone flying a breeze even for amateurs who have never operated a drone before. If the Wi-Fi connection is stable enough, you can easily share the photos or videos you have recorded with your drone on Youtube, Facebook or other social networking platform, thanks to the advanced Free Flight App mentioned earlier.
When it comes to the overall appearance and body of the drone, it must be said that one of its strong points is the ABS plastic-based case, which is highly resistant to impact, scratches and harsh weather conditions. Also, the propellers of the drone are specifically designed to automatically stop when the drone lands, thus saving the user a lot of time and trouble. Overall, BeBop is so volatile that it can safely and easily be used both indoors and outdoors!
Another important benefit is the GPS receiver that is embedded in the drone and that allows you to easily switch to Autopilot mode, with only several pushes of a button. This way, even if your drone is a couple thousand feet away, it will still find its back home with the help of the “Return Home” feature. The dual-core CPU and the 8GB of flash memory that are built into the drone allow you to record high-quality, crystal clear videos and to take high resolution pictures.
Lastly, the drone features an advanced flight stability system that collects information from several different sensors. This system is designed to keep the drone as straight and stable as possible while it is in mid-air, based on the information gathered from the Bebop’s pressure sensor, its three-axe accelerometer, gyroscope and its magnetometer.
What You Might Not Like
Even though the drone does offer a great value for the money, the Parrot Bebop seems to have a couple of downsides, as many users have reported. Firstly, many users complain about the defective software: while the hardware seems to be top-notch, the software of the drone can be glitchy at times, causing the device to suddenly take off or to crash unexpectedly.
We strongly recommend heading to the Parrot website and thoroughly read the manual, and watch the flight instruction videos. Also, be sure to upgrade your firmware and software to the latest versions, BEFORE flying your new Bepop. The new versions resolve a number of common issues.
The BeBop drone is accompanied by a 1200mAh Li-Po battery, which would normally be a long-lasting and durable one, the estimated flying time is of around 10-12 minutes which is rather short for a drone in this price range and intended for aerial photography.
The Bottom Line
To sum it all up, the Parrot Bebop drone with Skycontroller is a great long-term investment for those who want to take their piloting experience a mile further. Featuring a remarkable image quality and an ultra-intuitive application that is completely free of charge, this drone will undoubtedly redefine the way you see unmanned aerial vehicles.
